Trying to sort through my gestures and get organized so I can tackle all of this. So, keep in mind this is all super brief and unfinished - all the headshots will be torsos because hand placement is almost as important as jaw direction, and then I still have greetings/formalities/bows/sharings so on and so forth to get through.
So to start off, if you haven’t you can read through the About Locks section. You can also get a sense of how their heads and faces work here and the important parts here. The most intimate or vulnerable spaces on a Lock are the hollows of its jaw. Most, if not all of the Locks’ physical interactions have to do with where the teeth are in relation to the face and the vulnerable spaces. Where their hands go and how is a close second.
Tonight we’re sticking with the biped form.
Some ‘no threat intended’ gestures, usually marked by a chin tuck and palms up. There are varying degrees of this initial gesture, from the submissive ’don’t hurt me’ to ‘I recognize your authority’ to ‘I won’t hurt you.’ Submission among Locks is generally recognized through anything from a brief head dip (part of greeting) to a full on bow (recognizing the authority of a higher will or fully submitting to an opponent). The head dip insinuates what the full submit intends - to reveal the back of the neck which is a tactical weak spot. Forced submits involve teeth or hands gripping the back of the neck and forcing the bow.
Confrontations between Locks usually do not involve anything beyond jaws unless the dispute escalates into sparring. A Lock’s head rests between a 35-45degree angle naturally. Tucking the chin to the chest can indicate unease, an unwillingness to communicate, a desire to rest (ie the polite version of ‘go away and leave me alone’), or affront depending on the amount of tuck and the angle of the neck. Raising the jaws above the relaxed angle is normally an indicator of aggression, although at times it can be representative of stark curiosity. An avoidant Lock may rear its head back at a strange angle and potentially tilt it.
Direct threats or challenges are issued by pointing one’s teeth at the spot between the other’s eyes. When the situation calls for it two aggressive Locks will square off by raising their jaws and staring each other down. If neither backs down they can go to gaping. On very rare occasions they might clack their jaws together, but gaping usually solves the problem, it being a way to semi-show off one’s voidself without actually getting it involved. Physical confrontations between creatures of will might seem redundant, but it’s one of the ways Locks have adapted to a partial existence in the material world, where the clashing of their wills could do potentially serious damage. Gape-offs and clacking are typically reserved for reminding ‘younger’ Locks of their place, although it may also happen between Locks of equal strength. A Lock that concedes in a confrontation will turn or tilt its head to the side to expose a hollow or bare the back of its neck in a submit gesture. In the former the victor will touch the bridge of the nose or forehead with their face in acceptance. In the latter where a full bow is concerned, the victor will touch the back of the neck with their nose or teeth.
I also started on the affectionate bits, although I’m not sure these will help clarify anything until I get the rest of the torsos and the hands in there. Hand placement plays a pretty significant role in helping determine just what kind of affection is happening. Locks are generally not fond of physical contact with each other unless there is a companion, a bonded companion, or an exception (Jarovin, Aryian, etc) involved. Most casual-affectionate (companion, or general familiarity) interactions involve two Locks that are content being near each other. They may rub cheeks, bonk heads, or touch faces on occasion. They will typically avoid the neck and hollows as Lockian companionships should lack Lockian physical intimacy. Soothing gestures fall somewhere between familiar and Bonded companion territory.
Bonded companions, by contrast, are all about the intimacy. In addition to the familiar and companionship gestures, special attention is focused on the neck, beneath the jaws, and towards the hollows. They may be extremely affectionate and where contact between companions is an occasional thing, between Bonded companions it is a constant thing. Especially during the latter stages of Bonding they are in each other’s space as much as they can manage. This is as physically intimate as a Lock can get as true Lockian intimacy involves the mind and will and not the body.
And more to come as I work things out.
Looking at this now wow Jeih way to break all the rules ever.
I’ve gotten lots of questions about this so let’s kick off the new year by hopefully clearing this up.
Write-up/summery below the cut. This is a revision of what was up on the wiki.
Facerubs from Aryian and Jeih, in line with the appropriate displays of non-Bonded Companion familiarity/affection. Noses and teeth kept away from hollows and the backs of necks, respectively.
Face (or cheek) rubbing is a pretty flexible gesture. It can stand for the Lock version of a hug, reassurance, a greeting to someone familiar, affection, acceptance, can be used to reinforce dominance… as typical with Locks the meaning of a gesture in any given encounter depends on the way in which the gesture is expressed and completed.
It’s also great because the sides of their heads are squishy.
Jeih and Aryian, put into perspective.
I save a helpful links so I think “ow,i should made a masterlist”. I only found the link from my bookmarks.
**maybe i renew/add a new link that i found

Doodles. Trying my hand at the nose touches and other random stuff.
Once the hypervigilance of trying to pass as human sort of fades, at least in private they fall back to more Lockian gestures. They keep the nose touches, although it seems to become more of a reassurance thing as they’re pretty much blind and deaf and senseless (human senses are exceptionally limited in comparison with Lock senses).
It’s not like a happy, friendly, ‘let’s rub noses for minutes on end’ thing though. It’s more of a weird stoic quick thing where they stare directly at each other and someone puts a nose out, and the other does the same and then it’s over. Cheek rubs are sparsely used, humans just don’t have enough flesh on their faces to make them practical or all that comfortable.
There’s some fingers and teeth (mouth?) on hollow stuff that happens but not really sure how to approach that yet. Soothing and trust stuff. Again sparse. Teeth in hollows is a force submit type deal that doesn’t really work with human teeth but the point is made. Again Aryian isn’t fond of things (aka Jeih) near his hollows but may or may not instigate and temporarily accept that kind of interaction in recognition of the compromise they come to.
Still struggling to get this particular look that Aryian has. Just, really sharp, and intense, accentuated by the husky blue eyes. Like it should be hard to look directly at him for too long, you can’t stare him down his gaze just cuts.
im at dinner
I’m having artblock so I forced myself to draw these attempting to get over the thing. (i’m not sure if it worked)
notsurehowifeelaboutit but i do like how it looks like Sollux is reaching behind the box to grope eridans ass and eridan is like, “omg sol, plz”
